Playground Design

Image

Another long term project that we are progressing is the outdoor environment at HECC.  There has been a series of meetings with Jill Rice, Get Outside: Landscapes for Learning, a designer who has managed to work through our VERY long list of things we want in the outdoor area so the tamariki, whānau and teachers can maximise opportunities for teaching and learning. As much as possible the playground is accessible to children in their chairs and also those that are independently mobile. Attached is a draft design which is up on the office wall for consultation.  Please look and let us know your ideas, positive and negative. There is a very short time frame for consultation this time around!

This is the draft plan of the outdoor environment at Homai ECC.

Carving project

We have been working in the background to get our carving project in the entrance of HECC underway.  Last week we met with local Kaumatua, Rangi McLean and Master Carver, Wikuki Kingi to finalise the design, materials and cost.  It was a very exciting meeting and it is great to be making some forward progress on this project.

This is a photo of the draft sketch of the carving that will be created for the front entrance of HECC.

To all parents and caregivers of children receiving services from HECC

Please consider standing for the BLENNZ Board of Trustees at the next elections being held on the 30th May 2013. Information should have been posted to you about this. Contact the returning officer, Janny Cooke 09 2667109 extension 2000 for more information. Trustees on the BLENNZ Board of Trustees are automatically members of the HECCET.

Alternatively, as a parent or caregiver of a child attending HECC we would like to encourage you to express your interest to be a parent/caregiver trustee position on the HECCET only. This is an exciting opportunity to be a member of the Trust which governs the only licensed early childhood centre in the country for children who are blind, deaf blind and low vision.

If you are interested in being a parent/caregiver representative for the HECCET or if you want to find out more about this role please contact Megan Walker, 09 266 ext 2102.

Information papers and a form for you to write your expression of interest will be posted to all parents by the Megan in Term 1 and ‘expressions of interest’ will close on 16th May.

Clonker Board Sessions

We are experimenting with some new group activities on the resonance boards.  In the following photo, Eli and Abbey are experiencing the rhythm on their bodies with chopsticks as the ‘happy sticks’ song plays in the background.

Thanks to Chrissy MacDonald for introducing us at HECC to Clonker Board activities.

A Clonker Board is a big resonance board made from a sheet of plywood raised off the ground with wooden batons round the edge to make a frame.  Some of the activities which we have adapted during these sessions came from a workshop held by Naomi Rosenberg.

HECC Christmas Party 2012

Image

Dec 12th: We had a party to celebrate the end of the school year and we welcomed the Christmas Elf, who distributed the children’s presents (Santa was just too busy today).  We wish everyone a very happy and safe Christmas and New Year holiday season. See you all back the week of Feb 4th.

It was a busy morning.  Ajay and Becky led a sing-a-long of all of our favourite Homai ECC songs/waiata.  We shared kai and also planted some special trees in soil from the old Homai ECC building.  These trees will form part of a nature trail in the new school playground.
